acute toxicity studies of syzygium guineenses

1. Background

The present finding from the acute toxicity study agreed with the study reported by other researchers that there was nontoxic nature of the aqueous leaf extract of S. guineense up to 6000 mg/kg [18]. In addition, the study done on 80% methanol extract by Zeleke [ 17 ] showed that there was no sign of toxicity and mortality at 2000 mg/kg dose.

The acute toxicity of ethyl acetate V. doniana leaf showed LD 50 to be greater than 5000mg/kg body weight and there was no significant weight increase (P ≥ 0.05) in both body weight and organs of the test mice. This suggests that there is safety in the use of V. doniana leaf extract in treatment of infections.
